Hypertension, commonly referred to as high blood pressure, is a chronic medical condition characterized by elevated blood pressure levels in the arteries. This condition can lead to significant health risks if left untreated. Hypertension is typically defined as having a systolic blood pressure (the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats) of 140 mm Hg or higher and a diastolic blood pressure (the pressure in the arteries when the heart is at rest between beats) of 90 mm Hg or higher. Hypertension is often referred to as a "silent killer" because it can develop gradually over time without any noticeable symptoms. Many people with hypertension are unaware of their condition until it is diagnosed during a routine medical check-up or until it leads to complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney problems, or vision issues.
